Life: Friday Ramblings

I was super psyched to FINALLY...
...find the yellow throated warbler!  About a week ago, I got a bird alert that there was a yellow throated warbler located in the pinetum near my house.  I ran over there eager to find the bird.  I mean, how hard could it be to find a bird smaller than my hand hanging out in pine trees taller than the Rockefeller Christmas Tree?  Hard, people.  Really hard.  It took four separate visits, two different accomplices, and a woman that worked for National Geographic for me to finally see this bird.  To say I was excited is an understatement.

The yellow throated warbler...
...is practically nonexistent in NY.  It prefers warmer climates so this was a big deal in the birding world of Long Island.

My heart melted when...
...I walked to the other end of the arboretum to find my family and saw what's pictured above.  The kids and my husband were entertaining themselves by running around a tree.  Is that really more fun than seeing the bird?

That same day, we were visited by...
...a Budgerigar, or in American, a parakeet.  He came two days in a row.  He would come to me and then fly off making him impossible to rescue.  We bought a cage and filled it with parakeet seed in the hopes that he will fly in and be rescued.  After seeing him two days in a row, he did not return.

I'm sickened to learn that...
...people are buying parakeets from pet stores and then releasing them into the wild as the latest TikTok trend.  This incredibly irresponsible act, leads to these little guys dying.  While I agree that birds don't belong in cages or in people's homes, to let them lose in an environment where they don't belong is a death sentence.  If they don't freeze to death, they get attacked by predators because they don't have the protection of a flock and are unfamiliar with the area to find a hiding place.  These people should be arrested for animal abuse!

Please join me in wishing...
...my Aunt and Papa the HAPPIEST birthday today!

What are your Friday Ramblings?

  1. We've had such budgerigars in cages before, my father and grandfather used to have one or two, we had blue, yellow, green ones, the last one dropped dead, poor sod, when someone came into the house late and he got a heartattack from the doors and dropped of his perch. He was about 15 or 20 years old which is probably ancient for birds.

    1. OMG, what a way to go. Poor baby! I haven't seen the little guy in 5 days so I'm assuming he didn't make it. :(

Ok, what is a bird alert? An app that people use in your area to talk about bird sightings?

  3. Happy birthday to your aunt and your Papa!

Hubby got me a camera as an early Mother's Day gift so I can get some better pictures of the birds, just in time for them to stop coming by. The finches have pretty much stopped coming but the wrens and titmouse still stop by. I saw my first hummingbird yesterday! My plan is to go into the woods and hang out there. I figured now that it's warmer, that's where they all are. What's the app you're using?

    1. I use Merlin Bird ID. Also, excuse me while I EEP that you're going birding!! hahaha This makes me so happy! Can't wait to see all the pictures. So odd that the finches stopped coming. Over here, they're the most popular bird at the feeders. The wrens have completely disappeared but they are usually a Fall or Winter bird at feeders since they eat bugs.

    2. Wait a minute, are you telling me that Merlin will tell me what's in the area? I've been using it to ID only. I'm so excited. Yes, I can't wait to go into the woods. Between migraines and home construction, I haven't been out there yet. Fingers crossed this weekend!

  4. Happy Birthday to your Aunt and Papa!

Glad you had an exciting bird sighting.

Humans suck. Why the hell is that even a TikTok trend? Do they think they are doing a good thing by setting the birds free? I just can't with people. The internet has showed us how truly worthless people can be :(

  6. Happy birthday to your Aunt and Papa! Birds are great, i would like to see them in the wild life not in the pet-shop. I need to go out of city to see them.
