Life: Friday Ramblings

bayard arboretum

I went for a power walk with...
...my not so baby girl this past week.  I've been trying to live a healthier lifestyle and our walks are really contributing to that.  It's exercise, bonding time, and lots of fun exploring.  This week we went to the Bayard Arboretum where they have a long, scenic walking trail.  Part of that trail is a piece called the "River Walk".  It's a long, winding trail along the Connetquot River.  I always get excited when we pass by the Vanderbilt Mansion across the way.  While this is one mansion that I haven't toured, our walks are motivating me to take a little visit!  You can see how magnificent it is in the above picture.

We learned that...
...the large mansions many that belong the Vanderbilt family have been a huge factor in preserving bits of Long Island.  We live in a densely populated area that's been taken over by concrete.  What's left to enjoy of nature is typically located around a historic estate such as this one.  We also learned from reading the signs along the river, that the home belonged to W. K. Vanderbilt, son of the richest man in America in the year 1881.  He was a member of the South Side Sportsmen's Club which is part of the Connetquot Nature preserve that we like to frequent.  Today this estate is part of a local and VERY expensive college.  Long story short- we learned that we have lots to thank the Vanderbilts for!

My very smart daughter said...
..."Wow, mommy, this is like a vacation".  Well, she's not wrong except for the part that it was free!

The Viking recently...
...purchased some property upstate where he plans to retire within the next decade.  He's been working hard to clear trees, make a road, and bring electricity to the land before building a house.  We had a blast last weekend taking a leisurely ride upstate to see his "neck of the woods".  We're looking forward to him building a home and us being able to visit more often.

I'm REALLY frustrated with...
...The Children's Place!  Every year I spend hundreds of dollars at this store.  In the Fall, I purchase Christmas outfits for both kids plus a whole Winter wardrobe.  I do the same in the Spring except with Easter outfits and a Summer wardrobe.  Two weeks ago I purchased everything the kiddies would need to get through the season and dumped a whopping $300.  Well, they said my package was delivered, yet it never made it to my house.  I was working from home so I went right to the door.  I called their customer service line and they told me that they have to "investigate".  What are you going to do?  Knock on my neighbors doors to see if they got the package?!  Well, their investigation takes two weeks.  At that point, my babies would not get their Easter outfits in time.  I was forced to lay out an additional $300 to reorder the same items under the hopes that their "investigation" leads to a full refund of the first order.  When Christmas rolls around again, I'm going to have to look into a different clothing store to frequent.

What are your Friday Ramblings?

  1. I think that the Vanderbilts are in the new HBO period set series from Julian Fellowes GILDED AGE. So happy for the Viking and his future new den!

    1. Selfishly, I don't want him to move to the middle of the woods, but he did seem so happy. He bought property only a few minutes away from a close friend of his. It was nice to see him have someone up there, especially when I saw this friend treat him like family. His friend welcomed us all into his home, made the kids grilled cheese, made us BLTs.. even told us to take a nap. It was like a long lost uncle. Although, you would have ran out of there. There was so many dead animals everywhere that my son thought it was a zoo.

  2. Very nice blogsite! Thank you for providing this site. This article reminded me of Rhode Island / Newport and mansions. It was great sight seeing for us at 2010. Happy weekend

    1. The Breakers Mansion that many tour while in Newport, is the home of the Vanderbilt's as well. Not a distant relation either, it belonged to immediate family.

  3. Wow, that mansion is amazing! It also looked haunted! Lol! That’s cool that you can see it on a walk.

I would hate moving to the middle of nowhere. Are your parents still married? How does your mom feel about that?

    1. They aren't still married, but she was happy for him. Apparently this was his dream from as long as she can remember. I agree about not liking the middle of nowhere. Living in the middle of nowhere is how people start to believe in Sasquatch.. I kid, I kid. :)

  5. What an impressive mansion. I'd totally want to tour it if I were close by.
I am so with your dad on retiring out in the middle of nowhere. When we first started looking for land, Jason and I would take long drives out into the boonies looking for 10+ acres with a lot of trees so we could just get lost from the outside world.
Boo on TCP. I used to buy all of my kid's clothing from there when they were little, but it seems that the quality and the service has gone way downhill in the last 10 years. If I still had little ones, I would look elsewhere for my kid's clothing. I hope you get a refund for your lost package.

  6. Imagine trying to clean that? A good way to get out and about and enjoy the vacation that costs nothing indeed. That stinks that the package didn't arrive but they said it did. Screw using them again. Tell your dad to build a room onto his house for sasquatch. Never know when he might want to sleep over lol
