Life: Friday Ramblings

I was a little disappointed that...
...the owl safari I mentioned a couple weeks back reached capacity and we weren't able to go.  Instead, the nature preserve signed us up for a Winter Wonderland walk which was an easy 3 mile hike.  Our guide stopped periodically throughout the hike to point out some cool facts about the wildlife that lived in the preserve.  It felt good to get out and move around but I was still obsessed with seeing an owl.

The guide surprised me with...
...a private visit with a rescued Eastern Screech Owl!  She heard me keep asking for owl nests to be pointed out so she knew I was dying to see one.  Plus, I'm sure my professional camera lens and binoculars sold me out...  The Eastern Screech Owl was asleep, but I was happy that I got to see one.

Then nature gave me the biggest surprise of all...
...by having a bald eagle swoop down right over my head.  Well, I started SCREAMING!!  I threw everything on the ground, fumbled with my camera, and did my best to get a decent photo.  My husband threw our son off of his shoulders in fear that the bald eagle would want to eat our baby boy.  My daughter stood, staring, with her mouth wide open in awe.  While you can't really tell that the above picture is a bald eagle, I'm here to confirm that it is!  We were all in shock that there were bald eagles native to Long Island, but I'm so glad that we learned about it in that dramatic, exciting way.  It's something that my daughter will definitely remember!

I'm a little late, but...
...I finally downloaded some of the pictures from my dad's birthday.  I made homemade stuffed shells, homemade chicken parmesan, and for dessert we had a Carvel ice cream cake.  It was a small celebration, but he's happy to be alive and well at 58 years young!

I'm suffering from mixed feelings about...
...Walker!  I'm watching it because of Jared Padalecki, but I'm not too hyped about the show.  First off, they gave Walker a brother on the show when we all know Jensen Ackles is his true brother which I felt was unnecessary.  Secondly, his partner Texas Ranger is a relatively petite female trying way too hard to prove to the world that she's a bad ass.  Thirdly, the show as just meh, but with potential to get better as it goes.  We'll be crossing our fingers that it does because my Thursday nights haven't been empty in over 14 years!

What are your Friday Ramblings?

  1. Your dad always looks so young and fresh in photos.
Owls wanted to eat some of my cats when they were kittens, so I'm on the fence with them.

    1. Eep!! What kind of owl?! I'm sure the owl just wanted to play with the babies. :) Thanks! My dad will be happy to hear it.

  2. Wasn’t Walker Texas Ranger a show from the 90’s? Just sounds boring to me! I watch Southern Charm on Thursday nights, but it just had its season finale last night. That is crazy about the bald eagle! We have them here and you can go to the National park to see their nests, but they stay far away from people, so your experience is surprising! Glad you had a nice birthday with your dad. Tell Dez that 58 is the new 38! That’s what I’ll be telling myself in May!

    1. That's so cool! I always thought that bald eagles were more out west so I was extra shocked to see one, especially so close. It's funny b/c when we first arrived, there was a man with this giant camera. He was telling us that he was here to see the bald eagle. I was like "yea, ok crazy" in my mind..but now I completely take it back. :)

Great memories... Wish I had more pics of my family.

    Hope you're doing fine!

  5. Jason sees bald Eagles on his kayaking trips often, but he only has his iPhone and the photos never turn out great. I've only seen them once here. They built a nest at one of our local parks on top of a very high pole. Such amazing birds!
Your dad is such a handsome man. I hope he had a wonderful birthday!

    1. That's so cool! They're cool from a distance, but intimidating up close. The viking will be happy to hear these compliments. Thank you :)

  6. Great you got to see an owl after your super obsession. I have yet to hear of an eagle snatching a kid, dogs and cats, but no kids lol

Walker is getting mixed reviews. That is most CW shows. They try way too hard with the female to act bad ass. Like Claire in Supernatural. Hated her character because they tried waaaaaaaaaay too hard.

    1. LOL My dad sent me a video of a bald eagle picking up a child on a golf course. I'll have to send it to you. Yea, not a fan of those characters. Claire was always a whiny brat. I mean, I could see her hating Cas, but everything else was unnecessary!

  7. lol well that would be one to see.

Yep. The rest of it was just overacted nonsense with her.
