StoryTime: Spooky Stories

In honor of h a l l o w e e n, let's share some spooky stories!

I grew up in a newly built house in a fancy development.
The development was plotted to be built on one of the very few undeveloped areas on Long Island.
As they knocked down all the trees to build the homes, they found a fully constructed long house.
As they started digging to build the foundation, they found bones and artifacts.
You think that would have been enough info for my parents to run for the hills, no??

The house I grew up in was built on a Native American burial ground.
True story!

One night, long after I moved out,  my brother was forced to stay home alone.
He asked me to stay the night and sleep on the couch so he wouldn't be alone in the house.
I regretfully agreed.

I grabbed both of my pooches, a blanket, and a pillow.
I took out my contacts and rested my glasses next to the couch in case of an emergency.
The air was cold and I had shivers going down my spine.
I fell asleep listening to the deep breathe of my puppy, Pip.
Rest in peace Pipster.  He passed away a few months back.  He really was a great dog!

I eventually fell into a deep sleep breathing harmoniously with my pooch.
The night was as silent as a night could be.
All of a sudden I got awoken by someone shouting my name.
I quickly opened my eyes and Pip started barking just as quick.
My glasses were still next to the couch, but I could see a blur floating above me.
I screamed "BROTHER" so loud that he came running out of his bed faster than Flash.
He turned on the light and looked whiter than the ghostly image hovering above me.
I think I squeezed poor Pipster's eye balls out of his little puppy head...
Brother admitted to seeing a figure, although he could not make out a shape.
It vanished once he turned the lights on.

I told Brother to get the dogs, all of his stuff, and pack the car that moment.
Whatever it was haunting that house knew my name and I was totally not cool with that!

That was the last time I ignored my better judgement and spent the night in that house.
The house has long been sold and newly inhabited, but I still remember the fear.
To this day, whenever I see a staircase from the corner of my eye, I imagine a little Indian boy's presence.
The same little Indian boy that haunted my childhood home.

Did you ever have a supernatural experience?

Recipe: Pasta with Butternut Squash Sauce

Two things my life is real short on lately is money and time.
To save on both of those things and to keep my family healthy, I try to cook every night.
Except for Fridays.  I totally deserve at least one take out night, right?

Growing up Madre used to make this butternut squash soup that was so yummy.
I loved it, but it totally would not fill up my 6'4 Cubano.
To solve that problem, I took my mom's recipe and twisted it up.
In the words of MushyFace "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy!"

Pasta with Butternut Squash Sauce

2-lb Butternut Squash
(5-7) Sage Leaves (I roughly chop them up with a scissor.)
1 Qt Chicken Broth
3/4 Cup Parmesan Cheese
1/4 Cup Olive Oil
Dash of Nutmeg
1-lb Pasta of Choice  (I love a swirly pasta for this recipe.)
Molasses to drizzle

Stab the squash about 6 times in random spots all around.  Place on a microwave safe dish, and cook in the microwave for 8 minutes.  Let sit in the microwave and cool for 10 minutes.
This will make the squash soft enough to work with for us weaklings!

Cut the squash in half and scoop out all the seeds to toss in the trash.  Peel the skin with a sharp knife and cube the squash.

Heat the olive oil in a deep pot.  Place the cubed squash in the pot.  Add the chicken broth, sage leaves, Parmesan cheese, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.  Cook until the squash soaks all the broth.  Meanwhile, boil your pasta.  With a potato masher, mash the squash until it looks like a thick sauce.  Cook on low for another 5 minutes stopping to stir sporadically.
Your house is going to smell so yummy while you cook this!!

Once the pasta and your butternut squash sauce is done, mix together and serve in a bowl.  Drizzle molasses on top for extra perfection.

The next time I make this, I'll snap a picture to share.
It really is a pretty dish and very delicious.
...and when things are pretty, they always taste better!  Right?

What is a quick dish you make with Autumn flavor?

**I received an e-mail yesterday asking me how often I will post.  I will be posting every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday if you want to stop by.**

List: Let's get reaquainted!

Since it's been 2 years since we last heard from each other, I figured we'd play catch up.
...and what better way than a list...

While some things will never change, life always happens and people have to mold.

I didn't grow.  I'm still only five feet tall.  I didn't gain any weight or get crazy plastic surgery.
I still have anxiety and OCD, although it's sort of shifted.
Whoever told me that a baby would make me not care if my laundry is folded into a perfect rectangle totally lied!!
I still live in NY and I still have the same wonderful Long Island personality.
I'm still close with TheViking, Madre, Biff, Sis, and Cousin.
I even still kill bugs with hairspray and scream at the sight of strawberries.

But, none of that means that Jax didn't change!

1.  Long Live the Love Bug
Remember my cute little yellow Volkswagen with the eye lashes?
Yea, well, apparently they aren't appropriate to transport a baby in...
Phooey to whoever invented that law!  Love bugs love children!! now I drive a more mommy appropriate car.
Despite that I feel like I lost a little piece of myself, I now drive the LoveBug's cousin.
Meet Tessa The VW Tiguan.

2.  Move Aside Glamour
Remember when I used to obsess over Glamour and read through the pages like it was holy?
I would take it everywhere and reference articles months later.
Well, something happened...
It started as a fling, but it eventually turned into something more.
I dumped Glamour for Cosmopolitan and never looked back!
Cosmo is just like Glamour, but with just a little more balls...

3.  Priorities
Since MushyFace and My man came into my life, all of my priorities changed.
I'm no longer the most imporant thing in my little world.  She and him always comes first.
I know.  You're thinking that's a good thing, right?  Yea, well, I took it to an extrememe.
I stopped going to school and never got my bachelors.  I stopped blogging to watch them sit.
I left my career for a well paying job that makes me miserable.
I didn't even cook what I like anymore to make sure they are happy with their meals!
But, the good news is, MushyFace, MyMan, and I now all share the #1 priority spot!

4.  I'm Engaged!
No more horrible dates or looking for "the one".
I've been engaged since July 2013 and am due to be married July 2015.
Although I sometimes wish I can still go on a few more man-cations before the big day!

5.  Football
I used to be obsessed with football and the players.
And then Mr. Aaron Hernandez went and got himself arrested!!!!!!
My football idol turned out to be a murderer and ruined everything for me.
I haven't watched a full football game or played on a fantasy team since.
Maybe someone will miraculously prove his innocence soon?  No?  Ok...

6.  The Japanese
I no longer work for the Japanese company I was at when we last spoke.
I now work for a huge company that lays people off so often that I feel like I'm playing survivor!
No worries, my resume is out there and people are biting!
I will get my career back on track and stop working all those horrible hours of overtime.

7.  Boogers?  Who cares!
Mucas, spit, and all those other bodily secretions that used to make me say "bleh, gag, barg"...
...they no longer effect me!
Unless they make their way into my mouth.  Bleh, gag, barf!

8.  Pasta, Pasta, Everywhere
I'm of 100% Sicilian descent.  That means lots of pasta, and almost every day.
Pasta is no longer my filler of choice.
Since I've been living with MyMan of Cuban descent, I bought a rice maker!
Yes, that's right!!  Jax has been cooking rice!!
It's so easy, too.  You just hit the "on" button and it practically cooks itself!

9.  Bedtime
I used to stay up until all hours of the night either partying, blogging, watching TV or playing Isketch.
Now, I'm lucky if I make it past 9:30!
I'm so busy all day long, that all I want to do is  s l e e p...
Although, I'm watching Prison Break.  Wentworth Miller has been keepin me up past bedtime.  Yum!!

10.  Shampoo
Remember when I used to spend huge $$ on shampoo?  I even dedicated posts to it!
Well, that has certainly changed...and for 2 reasons.
The first reason is MyMan uses half a bottle every time he washes his short haired head.
He doesn't even squeeze the shampoo into his hand.  He squirts it right onto his hair.  Ug!!
The second reason is that Suave has made a professional line that's real good and real cheap!
But, no worries, I still use a different brand for every day of the week.
I mean, you need a shampoo to wash out the residue of the previous days shampoo, right?

So...catch me up!!
What has changed about you since I've been away?

Life: Something's Missing

It’s been years, months, days, and many minutes since the last time I’ve posted to R&W.
Raviolis and Waterworks was my home away from home.

Since I’ve become a mom, a student, a dedicated employee, and a fiancĂ©…
...I’ve had to cut out many things from my life.
The one thing that I regret cutting out of my life the most is blogging.
Blogging has helped me deal with anxiety, become a better person, make friends, and even help people.

First, I would like to apologize for my sudden, unexplained disappearance.
…and a thank you to those who sent out the search parties…
Second, I would like to beg and plead to come back.
I hope to become an avid part of the blogging community again.
I also hope to be welcomed back with open arms.

That's my man, my mushy face, myself, and my God son.

I will do my best to juggle the responsibilities of everyday life and to still deliver the fun site I had in the past.
You know, back when I was a youngin’.  ;)
I miss writing my lists, telling my silly stories, and venting about the world.
I cannot wait to start again!

Did you ever have a hole that needed filling and how did you fill it?

Welcome to R&W
