Quite a few weeks back I promised my home girl, Elsie, an ode to NY.
I didn’t want to be a tease, so I waited until an appropriate time to dangle NY’s goodness in front of her face!
I’m a great friend, I know! Lol
Being the simple minded, sheltered person that I am, Blogger has continuously blown my mind!
For some reason I thought all of the US was like where I was born and raised.
It took Pat Hatt to teach me that my idea of the “country” is a NY thing.
It took Betsy to teach me that Black & White cookies are a NY specialty.
It took Elsie to teach me that egg and cheese specials are for NYers.
…you would think I never traveled, huh?
On top of all that, I have received several e-mails requesting some tips of what to do in NY.
Maybe I should have been an event planner because helping out those people was so fun!!
Jax’s Top Ten Favorite Things About NY
10. Pizza
I eat pizza at least once a week. My thighs might hate that, but it’s my favorite thing in the entire world!!
I know that pizza is totally clichĂ©, but that’s why I listed it as #10.
9. Fire Island
We have access to beautiful beaches filled with all sorts of different people.
Fire Island is one of the best places to get the real NY beach type of feel. FI is famous for its day & night life.
For those sensitive about certain “relations”, make sure that you rock the right side of the island. Just sayin…
8. Shopping
NY has some of the best shopping in the entire world.
Dress all edgy and prance around the city. Dress all fancy and prance around the Hamptons.
Oh, how I love walking around the city or the Hamptons pretending I’m on RHONY!!
7. Montauk
Montauk is gorgeous and a whole lot of fun!!
You can shop, eat, lay out, walk around, and even tour the Montauk Light House.
Besides, we should all “drive to the end”… No, I don’t have one of the bumper stickers…
6. Diners
Diners are one of my favorite places to go.
The food is good and reasonably priced. The atmosphere is welcoming and one of a kind.
What’s better than a chocolate malted and French toast at 3am after a club run? Nothing, that’s what!
5. Cultures
NY is filled with so many different people all grouped together by culture.
When you come to NY, you get to experience a little bit of every ethnicity that you can think of.
You can rock China town, visit Little Italy, or indulge in the Greekness of Astoria! The cultures are endless.
4. Christmas Time
There’s something magical about going to Macy’s on 34th st, seeing The Rockettes perform, and then passing by Rockefeller Center. The window and light displays throughout the city are also real mesmerizing!!
I would never, ever go anywhere during this time of year! I think of the holidays and I think NY.
3. Nails & Hair Salons
No one does hair and nails quite as well as NY salons!
Yes, that’s a fact from experience…
2. Sidewalk Food
Knishes straight off the truck. Hot pretzels as you’re walking along. Honey roasted nuts on a cart.
People also kill for street souvlakis, gyros, and dirty water dogs!
I don’t eat the latter, but people goes nuts for it!
1. Action
My all-time favorite thing about NY is that there is always something to do and somewhere to go!
There is no such thing as being bored and living in NY. I mean, we don’t even close down on Sunday!!
Hello Broadway, museums, beaches, dinner shows, clubs, cruises, restaurants, and so on!
What are your favorite things about your hometown?
My favorite moment of The Office is when Michael Scott is in NYC and goes to his favorite pizza joint: Sbarros!
ReplyDeleteLMAO Ohh, how I love The Office...although I haven't seen it since Michael Scott left. I just can't imagine it being the same. lol
DeleteLOL yes, what you call the country is just plain WRONG! hahaha glad I could teach you something at least, you know that is a hard thing to do hahahaha
ReplyDeleteYep the diners are great and there is always something to do. I still want to come down during christmas season some time and see that, one of these years I will. Also you never close down huh? What about if there is snow? Didn't you say you are all afraid of that? hahaha
All the scenic stuff you said we have around here, our beaches are better too, so pfft to you haha. Other than the beaches, not sure if anything else is good about my hometown, it's quiet? That count? haha
LMAO That's the COUNTRY!!!! I'm telling youuuu...hahahaha
DeleteThe diners are so yum yum! You should definitely come on down around Christmas time. It's the most beautiful thing in the world. I can't imagine someone not loving NY during Christmas. :)
Quiet and beaches certainly count!! Although...that may drive me nuts after a while... lol ;)
I have been to NYC twice and I really enjoyed it, I LOVE NY style pizza and Montauk....well, it has a monster, it washed up on the beach a few years back.
ReplyDeleteGlad that you enjoyed it!! NYC is a great place to be. Ohh, I know all about the Montauk Monster. It was all over the news here!!!! It's all because of that scary, mystery island right off the shore. Sigh..
Deleteme too!! i like pizza!
ReplyDeletebut i don t like christmas time
Pizza, Pizza is yum yum!!!!
DeleteYou don't like Christmas time?? Why not?
The only thing I like about my home town is that it is home. Other than friends and family, it just plain sucks! I'm moving to NY!
ReplyDeletelol Come on over!!! Then again, we don't need another NYer around rooting against my Pats ;) lol
DeleteBabbles/Jax I have my list ready when ii van go some day to NY and hope you will be my guide lol
ReplyDelete1. Coffe Im sure are places with awesome coffes
where we can talk and drink coffe.
2some veggie and fruits stores Im sure a place with a lot of restsurants hsve amaxing places with goof stuff.
3 Pizzas alwsys I heard are awesome
4 some shopping (cosmetics and parfum) ha
I trust in you for this.lol
5. Central Park. At day of course.
Here we have lovely places too but I write so much in other post I comment about this; hsve a nice japaneses day ha!
Of course I will be your guide, Gloria!! :) :) Anytime!!
DeleteThat is a great list!! And, yes, trust me about the shopping. It's excellent :) :) Oh, yes, only go to Central Park during the day. There have been quite a few horror stories about that place at night. Eep!! lol
A nice Japanese day?? Oh, that made me laugh!! lol
Oh I write this so early and just begin your day lol
DeleteLOL I know, but the way you put it is funny! I mean, how many people get to enjoy a Japanese day?? ;) lol
DeleteI'm quite jealous of New York at Christmas time. It's summer here during christmas, so instead of sleighbells and chestnuts on an open fire, we have a good ol' fashioned Christmas BBQ. Which is nice, but I want to experience it the NY way now.
ReplyDeletePlus, Santa wears the same outfit, so he must hate coming to such a hot climate.
NY at Christmas is the best place to be. If you ever get the opportunity, come on over to NY and enjoy it!! It really is magical, as cliche as that sounds. lol A Christmas BBQ? Oh, that sounds crazy to me!!! lol
DeleteOhh, poor, poor Santa! I never even thought of that... lol
Yeah magical seems the best way to describe it. If I'm ever in NY again, can I count on you to show me around?
DeleteOf course, Michael!! Is that a question after hearing your voice??? lol You'll just have to keep talking and I'll keep walking and pointing ;) hahahaha
DeleteChristmas time in NYC is pretty darn magical. All of the shop windows are decorated and everyone is bustling around, wrapped up. I don't know if I could do it for as long as you New Yorkers do but it's certainly fun to visit
ReplyDeleteIt really is!! I love it!!! The shop windows are one of my favorite parts. I could just walk around aimlessly for hours staring at the buildings :)
DeleteWhere do I begin??? Of course I agree with the pizza, fire island and while sunken forest and such is gorgeous if you want a party cherry grove is where it's at!, I love the diners - especially greek diners YUM, my family is originally from Astoria =), and there's nothing quite like a dirty water dog - sabrett only, but of course I have to add bagels, chinese food with the fried noodles and hot mustard on the table, NO mustard on my burger without me having to ask!!! People driving like maniacs but knowing how to do it correctly, unlike where I live now...I could go on for days....LOL I can't wait to be there on Saturday!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jax - you rock my home girl =)
Ohh, the PIZZA!!! Yum, Yum, Yum!!!!!!
DeleteI agree with you. Whenever I go to FI, I'm always rocking Cherry Grove...although the bar burnt down almost a year ago now :( :(
You're family is originally from Astoria?? Really?? Oh, now it's all greeks/cyprians/egyptians. Steinway street is still one of my favorite places to hang out :)
I can't wait to hear all about it!!!!! Make sure you share every juicy detail with us.
LOL - my father's side is greek...but they moved out to the Island in the 70's
DeleteI'm sure I'll have stories to tell - at least those I can tell LOL
Pizza? I dont know about that, but I love that Vietnamese restaurant near Penn station or 8th avenue, I dont rememeber, and entire multi-cuisine hotels there in that lane. Love NY. I enjoyed every second there. And big apple should be named "city that never sleeps".
ReplyDeleteTraffic, Manhattan, Skyscrapers, and pollution and crowd and timesquare, NY is hellish heaven on Earth.
You don't know about pizza??? DOUBLE EEP!!! It's the best thing ever created in life!!! Sigh... lol
DeleteHellish heaven is a great way to describe it :)
Mmmmm NY pizza. I rarely eat pizza but I adore thin crust, and blasphemy or not I also love Chicago crust.
ReplyDeleteI already have restaurants planned to eat at and I won't be there until October of 2013. I haven't been there since I was a teen in a tour bus with a bunch of stinky boy musicians. It'll be nice to go there and actually get to relax in a hotel.
I've never had Chicago pizza, but I've only heard great things about it :) That's on my top 5 places I want to visit next.
DeleteOctober 2013 isn't all that far away considering how quick time goes. You're going to be munching on a NY slice soon enough ;)
What about bagels? I hear NY bagels are great!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about my home town? Is one of the few Canadian cities that almost never gets snow! Bland weather all year round! Yay! (plus it has more resturants per person then almost anyother Canadian city!)
Wait, there's a difference between a bagel and a NY bagel?? No way!!!! lol
DeleteOh, those are lovely things about your hometown. I'm liking the sound of mild weather!! Helllooo good hair days ;)
I'm in South Eastern Pa and it's slim pickings for great pizza!
ReplyDeleteOuch!!! I've never had PA pizza. Is it as good as ours when you go to the right pizzeria?
DeleteI so want to visit New York again. I went is High School to speak at the UN - it was a whole student debate thing and saw most of the city through a bus window and a hotel room because our chaperones thought we would get stabbed if we left their sight. I would be your cities worst nightmare as a tourist because I would have to do all the 'New York' things.
ReplyDeleteLOL Get stabbed? It's not that bad around here... lol That's awesome that you got to speak in the UN, though. I've been there once on a school trip as well. Nothing as exciting as your adventure though :) NY things is what you're supposed to do in NY! Go for it!!! :)
DeleteI can't agree more on diners in my very limited exposure to NY. A month ago when we were there, I thought I would be in the poor house feeding 4 of us, but we discovered diners on 9th avenue!! One place I had a 2 lb. piece of bacon and cheese quiche, a salad, a side, and lobster bisque for $11.99!!
ReplyDeleteOhh, yessss!!! Diners are the best things in the world!! I don't know how people live without them :) Awesome hangs outs with a great atmosphere.
DeleteI live in a beach community but hardly ever go to the beach. I much prefer the mountains. I lOVE New York. The last time I was there we discovered the frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity. A-MAZ-ING!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOMG I SHOULD HAVE PUT THAT ON MY LIST!!!!!! Serendipity is AMAZING!!! Random, but my "cover photo" on Facebook is all the empty cups and glasses from a pig out session my friends and I had there. Soooo yumm! Great pick ;)
Deletey'know, i've never been to New York, city or state, all artists are required to go there at least once, right? i'm a writer, not an artist, but i'm moving into actor territory, so...
ReplyDeletethe best pizza i ever ate was Ameci in Los Angeles, hope that lone store wasn't done in by the earthquake. is Montauk still haunted by the ghosts of experiments past, is there still a lot of Ghostbusters ectoplasm in the area?
i need a tour guide, hint hint...
Oh, you should certainly go to NY at least once in your life to say that you've been here! It's an awesome place. I'm not bias or anything... lol
DeleteYes, Montauk will always be haunted ;) lol
Tour guide??? I'm becoming a pro at this!!! haha
hey Jax!love the new layout of your blog:) been a long time since i've last been here! hope you're doing well, interesting post with some great trips for vacationers to NY:)
ReplyDeleteIncase you're wondering it's me Rakhshan from Rakhshan's Blog, i recently changed my username and Blogname as well, do have a look:)
thefashionpersonal.blogspot.com
Thanks girl! So glad to have you back :) I'll be heading over real soon.
Deleteoh how I love this! made me just want to go on a trip to NYC immeidiately!
ReplyDeleteI have been to NYC in the winter and it was wonderful. Definitely a fantasy of mine is to stay downtown over christmas one year. Which sounds great except for the fact that christmas is about family so i would feel kinda bad. maybe just the weekend before christmas or something.
I love that NYC is always hustling, I love that so much. I hate quiet and I hate not having the option of doing something or going somewhere if I want!
Also, you are correct- diner food after going out is God's gift to us. hah, not really but yum.
I would say my favorite thing about NY is the energy kind of like what you said. I like that everyone is on the mood- places to go and people to see, I love that. My least favorite are the cab drivers well more so their constant honking.
My favorite thing about Portland.. hmmm... probably it's location. I live downtown and there's a lot to do downtown but 1 hour west and you're on the beach. 1 hour east and you're skiing. 2 hours SE and you're in the straight desert. It's a staycationer's delight. My least favorite thing is just that I have cabin fever- need a change after so long. :)
NYC?? Holllaaa lol It is wonderful in the winter. I agree, I agree!! lol I love the hustle too, but sometimes I feel like I'm hustling through life. It's good to have the best of both worlds. I'm immune to the honking now ;) lol
DeletePortland sounds amazing!! The best of every world in each direction. Lovely!! Now Portland is on my list of places to visit. :)
PS- my grammar is not representative of me. I hate these auto-correcting features! I know the difference between "its" and "it's" and I meant- "everyone on the MOVE", not 'mood'. :)
ReplyDeleteNo worries, I get it!! :)
DeleteI have a friend that lives in Sayville on Long Island. I know all about Fire Island ;-) I had to laugh about how you described it. I think even the people in those relationships would get a kick out of it!
ReplyDeleteI live very near to Sayville! Sayville is a GORGEOUS town! Love it over there. My aunt actually lives right on the water out there. :) Fire Island is GODLY. I love it there!!
DeleteMy life long aspirations have always been to go to New York. I've heard amazing things and being from Vancouver BC id have to say that we've got some damn good sushi restaurants. Nice post
ReplyDeleteSushi?? Oh, I'm in!! :)
Deletesince it is the city I was born for :) I will buy and prepare a whole new wardrobe if I ever get to NY! God Forbid for me to appear there not looking like I just came from a catwalk :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I love that Dez!! Make sure you let me know so I can watch that cat walk!!! Work it!! ;) lol
DeleteI think Chicago (which I live close to) is a big enough city. New York just seems overwhelming. Maybe if I eat enough pizza I could handle it.
ReplyDeleteNY can be overwhelming to some, but it's usually addictive. There is something addictive about the atmosphere here. Eat enough pizza??? Is there a such thing as enough pizza??? lol
Deletesicilian pride says badda bing? HAHAHA! awesomeness made tag...
ReplyDeletei think a 10-item list is way too short to cover all of the amazing things that New York is made of! but i really appreciated your selection :) when i was there i really enjoyed walking accross the Brooklyn Bridge and also hanging out at Central Park. I had at least one gyro on the street which was naturally delicious... and i also munched on a scrumptious cupcake from Crumbs. oh and the window displays on 5th ave are to die for!!! :)
the things i like the most about Buenos Aires are many, but the highlights i think are the food and it´s nightlife... there´s just SO much to do... so many places to choose from. there´s no way for you to get bored!
XO!
Jannine
http://fashionistArg.blogspot.com
hahaha Glad that I could make you laugh with the tag :)
DeleteI agree. I have so many other things that I would love to put on the list, but I had to cut it off somewhere. lol I've never walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, but I've heard from many people that it's a lovely thing to do. I'm going to try and do that real soon. lol You ate a gyro??? Holllaaa LOL Crumbs is one of my favorite places ever!!! I love their raspberry crumb squares. So yum!!!!!
Buenos Aires sounds AMAZING!!!!! My best friend is from there. Would be great to see one day :)
I've told Elsie that you New Yorkers seem like an exotic species to me. I'd spend most of my time eating street food, eating in delis and going to all the different ethnic regions. It would be nice if you two could get together for a luncheon or a pedicure.
ReplyDeleteAs for Fire Island, my darling son would go to the left side of the Island as he's a gay man. Don't take that the wrong way Jax. I'm not upset that you put that qualifying statement in and I think it's important that we all know there are still people who would find it offensive. You can't imagine though how hard it is for a mother to see her son being looked at as an abomination. So very painful.
An exotic species?? Oh my!! Yes, that would be so fun to get together and I'm with you on the eating! nom, nom nom...It's hard to stop! lol
DeleteAn abomination? The area I live in is predominantly gay. In fact, I rock the gay clubs more than the straight ones. Cherry Grove is where it's at on FI!! That's where the party is and all the fun is. I can understand where you are coming from as a mother, but here there are very few people that would see him as an abomination. In fact, it's very common for people to flat out ask your sexual orientation when first starting to get to know someone. It's sad but there still is that very few who are uncomfortable in that sort of setting. It's backwards and uncalled for, but those people do exist.
I visited NYC once years ago. I've always wanted to go back. It was a great experience for a kid from the south to have. It really opened my eyes to what the world was like outside of the country. It had an effect on me that has shaped the person that I am today. I'll make it back there one day.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that NY really had that big of an impact on you!! Hopefully everyone has as positive of an experience as you did :)
DeleteMy hometown is a small city called Spartanburg in South Carolina. There's not much to love.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it has some lovely defining qualities, but your statement still made me giggle. lol
DeleteIve always wanted to visit New York, it's just a shame I live on the other side of the planet.
ReplyDeleteNowhere in the planet is too far :) If you ever get the opportunity, you should come for a visit!
DeleteI have been a lot of places and while I truly feel that I HAVE been to New York, I am ashamed to say that in reality I haven't! I need to get there, and I'll keep you in mind as a tourist advisor :)
ReplyDeleteI agree that you certainly need to come here!!!!! A tourist advisor? I'm on it ;) lol
DeleteI don't really have a favorite thing about where I live, but there isn't a whole lot to do (unless you're 3) either. haha
ReplyDeleteUnless you're 3? Well, at least your town is rocking for one age group!! lol
Deletehaha All the little kids have a bunch of stuff to do! Museums, play places, all sorts of events that come through town, three parks (that I know of) within five miles (and one is being turned into a little kid water park)... There are also a lot of good bands that come through, but they only play in a bar, which makes it a little impossible to go if you're underage and if you don't like rock.
DeleteLOL Wow, you weren't kidding!!! Well, the bands at the bar sounds like a great time. I'd become a groupie real quick ;) lmao
DeleteShopping is awesome!!Come check out my new blog.Yours is very nice.
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you!
DeleteGood Job Dear! i enjoyed seeing it,

ReplyDeleteThanks, Tina!! I knew you would with your hubby being a huge Giants fan and all... lol Oh, no one can ever have a boring time in NY...it's impossible!!! lol Never been to Montauk? Oh, get there as soon as you can. It's amazing and quickly eroding away!!!
DeleteJax talking about scones Esperanza adore Starbrucks is her favorite place to take coffe:)
ReplyDeleteI'm eating a cinnamon chip scone from Starbucks right now!! Nom nom nom... (Don't tell my bikini lol)
DeleteSomehow, I had no idea that you lived in New York. How did I miss this?
ReplyDeletelol I'm not sure!! Apparently it oozes from my pores ;) lol
DeleteChristmas in New York... it's been on my list for years. It's about time I booked a hotel, alright :))
ReplyDeleteyou can't go if you don't take me with you, Blue! That's my biggest wish too! Like ever!
Delete@RCB...come on down!! We could use a few more blue men walking around the city :)
Delete@Dez...Oh, I think you two would do fabulously on that cat walk ;)
I have only visited New York one time, when I was in high school. Would you believe I have performed on the stage in Carnegie Hall? Totally did. We were there over the Thanksgiving holiday and got to verbally accost Barry Manilow, as he was the parade's grand marshall that year and got stopped in front of our group (about 30 juniors and seniors...poor Barry) for about 20 minutes. I have to say, the holidays have never been the same for me since that year...that year was magical!
ReplyDeleteStreet vendor hot dogs and pizza are my favorites. Fire Island is now on my radar as well.
