I'm that person who carries around a pocketbook the size of luggage, another bag with my day's goodies, a second store brand reusable bag of "just in case"s and a coffee cup.
On a rainy day, add an umbrella.
My family and friends always tease me by calling me the bag lady.
Why am I filling your head with all this useless knowledge about myself? I'll tell you!
It turns out that these reusable shopping bags are the cause of massive virus outbreaks such as the norovirus epidemic in Oregon. These bags happen to be a germ fest!!!
I was completely ignorant of my dirty little habit until I stumbled across this article.
Thank you, Glamour, for once again saving my life!
My Sunday Skeeve-Fest will now include bleaching my keys, sanitizing EVERY door knob, and scrubbing the ever living crap out of all my reusable bags.
I'm all for saving the environment, so I won't be taking this skivatzo lesson too far.
I'll continue to ditch the plastic bags for my reusable Target bags in attempt to save landfills.
Besides, they make an awesome lunch bag!
Have you been washing your reusable bags?

Don't forget to join in on the fun with the Happy Birthday Muffin giveaway!
Lysol works too.
ReplyDeleteYes, it does!! :)
DeleteI don't jump into that tank filled with balls at the dentist's office and I don't touch other people's bags. Everyone is so germy aren't they and you live in germ central. If it hasn't killed you already I think you will be okay...you got a super immune system.
ReplyDeleteI know!! I certainly do live in germ central! Sooo gross, but that's ok. I'm with you on those ball pitts! Bleh, gag, barf! hahaha
DeleteHmm..interesting! They are probably mostly your own germs, though, since nobody else would be touching it. Probably like our purses. ha...more germs than we think I bet!
ReplyDeletewell they do say that there are more faecal germs on our keypads and office tables than in the toilet bowls, so I reckon it's the same with bags :) I do wonder, though, what Jaxy carries in them if there is fungus in them? :))) Pat's feet? :)
DeleteMy germs? No, that can't be!!! hahahaha Oh, I'm sure our pocket books are filled! hahaha
Delete@Dez...not my key boards or office table!! I clean mine every Friday. Bleh, gag, barf!!! Faecal matter than toilet bowls? ew,ew,ew,ew
What do I carry in my bags? Anything and everything...except for feet!!! hahahaha
That is so crazy and good to know! I like plastic bags because they are the perfect size for our little trash can. In DC, you have to pay 5 cents for each bag, which is just a hassle.
ReplyDeleteYes, they are perfect for the little garbage can. I do the same thing!
DeleteWow I never even thought about that....
ReplyDeleteYes, it's pretty awful once you think about it!! Bleh ;)
DeleteFirst, I love that you used "pocketbook." Everywhere else they say "purse". =)
ReplyDeleteSo, um, what are you going to do when you have kids? They are nothing but germ carrying creatures. I mean bundles of love!! LOL =)
Purse??? Isn't a purse a little thing that you put change into? Shows how much I know, girl! hahaha
DeleteLOL As far as kids go, heaven help me! I'm not really a fan of baby juice! Boogers, spit, and puke skeeve me! hahahaha
I definitely wouldn't have thought about this. What goes in the bags that carries such germs? A few germs help boost the immune system (or so I've been told).
ReplyDeleteI think it's more of the putting the bags down where ever and touching them with dirty hands! Gross if you think about it! bleh!!!
Deletesometimes I used them but the funny always forget I have and buy other one (now are so cheap here) Normally i bring to my mom with things I have to her, but i have a little bag that i love to my books and magszine whrn i travel in bus or subway and wash always:)
ReplyDeleteYou wash them always? Kudos, Gloria!! Many people don't and overlook it. I'm totally guilty of that as well ;)
Deletemy husband constantly complains about my large bag! and i do wash my reusable bags when i remember it, but i have to get better about doing it more often!
ReplyDeleteAt least you do them sometimes! That's better then most :)
DeleteLarge bag? Well, we got a lot of stuff to lug around! They won't complain when you magically pull out things they need. lol
AH HAH, I knew there was a reason I was the least green person on earth. Chalk one up for the lady who still uses plastic, disposable everything.
ReplyDeleteLOL I didn't mean to fuel to your ungreen fire!!
DeleteI wash mine regularly then wipe them down with Clorox wipes. I'm sure this isn't a surprise to anyone. :)
ReplyDeleteSurprise? Definitely not!! hahahaha That's one of the many reasons we like you so much :)
DeleteEEEK! I totally didn't even think of sanitizing my reusable bags, but now that you mention it, I MUST! Yuck! I'm all about saving the environment too, but it's gross to think that viruses are spreading by way of doing something good.
ReplyDeleteRight??? Who would have thought that something so simple could carry so many germs? Bleh!!! hahaha
Deletei´m super eco-friendly when it comes to bags... but i never thought of the unsanitary side to them! i´ll start cleaning them ASAP!!
ReplyDeleteeeks!!
have a wonderful weekend missy!
XO JAnnine
http://fashionistarg.blogspot.it/
Yes, chica!! Clean them!!!! Bleh, gag, barf!! I had no idea either. Now all of mine are in the garbage and I'll start over fresh. It will be added to my Sunday routine. :)
DeleteSounds like reusable shopping bags are nature’s latest attempt at keeping the world’s population in check .....
ReplyDeleteWay to go nature pick on the people that are actually trying to save the planet.....
hahahahahaha Ok, this one really got me going!
DeleteThat's good what you're doing for the environment, personally I don't use reusable shopping bags but I try to do what I can within reason for helping the environment.
ReplyDeleteYou don't use them? You should try it out! They make a great lunch bag :)
Deletei don't enter Target anymore, that place scares me with its green, horror-movie-pale overhead lights, long, infinity hallways and corridors, and that weird grocery section with the stands that are two feet tall...
ReplyDeletesigned,
a former skeeve
I love their grocery section!! Oh, I'm the Target queen. hahahaha
Deletei don't use reusable, ONLY because I recycle the bags I get. Mainly, for picking up poo. Gross, but true
ReplyDeletePicking up poo? Well, at least you're making use of them!! lol
DeleteYeah, these freaky articles ruins everything , dont they.
ReplyDeleteDr. Phil will ask us to use wooden spoons one day, I would empty my utensil drawer and fill it up with wooden ones and then Dr.Oz will ask me next to use stainless steel ones. Come on y'all, olden days people lived on eating raw meat but they didnt leave past 30 years. :(
I didnt know that thing about reusable bags now I need to throw them and buy new reusable ones every single time.
B/w Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz I'm going to have a mental breakdown one day!! I mean, those two are always telling me that I'm going to die of something or another. They should totally be taken off TV! Hmph.
DeleteBTB, people are suspecting you for Pat's disappearance is it the roast rhyme or tutu? What do you think?
ReplyDeleteMe responsible for Pat's disappearance? I would never do that!! What do I think? I think next time he should be wearing TWO tutus. Once around his waist and one his head. Word is, he really loved that tutu get up. lol
DeleteWow! I had no idea! thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome :)
DeleteI know, I heard about this and then promptly wiped down my reusable bags. ha, ugh. I used mine ALL the time esp bc i walk to get groceries downtown and enviromentalists are so obsessed with causes in Oregon that in Portland, grocery stores are no longer allowed to give out plastic bags to shoppers, only paper. and walking 9 blocks with groceries with paper is horrible. so yes, i'm cleaning my bags now too!
ReplyDeleteReally? Wow! So they aren't even allowed to hand them out anymore. So you were near that norovirus break out? Talk about rough!! And all caused from people trying to save the environment. Figures!!!
Deletei have have to toss them in the wash now. thanks!
ReplyDeleteYes, toss them in before another virus break out occurs! Bleh :)
DeleteI knew there was a reason I don't use those things! Don't worry I use and re use my plastic bags. I'm not a total lost cause on doing my part. (ok maybe a little) lol
ReplyDeleteLOL At least you try! That's all anyone can ask for :) lol
DeleteBollocks to the enviroment. I hollow out Dolphins and use them as bags to carry my shopping.
ReplyDeleteOh my!!! That's pretty awful!
DeleteI just use my plastic bags as a trash bag for small trash cans.
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing. It works :)
DeleteI do what Adam said, then pitch them. My girlfriend washes them out a reuses them though.
ReplyDeleteWow very interesting! I usually only use them for carying things not sure I'd actually use them for food
Delete@Nathan....washes them out and reuses them after garbage was in it? Oh no. Something tells me that would create even more viruses. lol
Delete@Baur...I do use it as a lunch bag. But my food is always wrapped in gladwares. :)
I'm sorry I'm late Jax. I'm having a hard time keeping up with blogs right now.
ReplyDeleteI don't go in for the reusable bags. I use the plastic ones from the store, but I use those bags for a lot of things around the house before I throw them out. I also don't carry a pocketbook!! If I can't stuff something into the pocket of my jeans, I don't take it with me. I think I'm the only woman who does this.
No need to apologize Anne! You have to take care of you and your family first :)
DeleteYou don't carry a pocketbook? Eep!!!!!! But what if you need something one day that isn't in your pocket? Like a pen, or tylenol, or girly things!!! hahaha
i care about the environment a lot, and i would get totally upset when my MIL and my hubs would just toss recyclable items in the garbage. this is a great awareness post, and more and more people should get reusable bags to save the environment.
ReplyDeleteenjoy your wknd, j!

AdamAlexMommy
I'm glad to hear that you care about the environment :) It will make a huge difference in the future!
DeleteThis is going to be off topic, you have been warned. Could even get nasty, lol.
ReplyDeleteI'm coming from Elsie's blog in which I seen a comment from you shouting "Goooo Patriots!" Those words make me want to puke! That can only mean one thing...I'm a Colts fan...obviously! Whenever I see a Patriots fan, it is in my blood to make that person's life a living hell!
I am so proud of Elsie's Giants not letting Tom Brady win a Super Bowl in the house of Colts! Football season is still months away....that should give you plenty of time to prepare for verbal bashing! lol
Ok, now that I got that out of my system... I don't take bags out with me to go shopping but I do put each bag I get to good use at home. Not a single bag goes to waste.
aaaahhhh, the refreshing sound of loving football banter =)
DeleteListen you two, don't be hating on my boys!! I'm sorry, but who carried the #1 spot for the majority of the season? Yea, that's what I thought!!! The superbowl should have been NE vs the packers! It would have been a real game vs the two top QBs. (Mr. Brady and Mr. Rodgers!!!!) Even though I'm not a huge Brady fan, I have to say that he's got skill! He schools almost every team that he faces :)
DeleteI'm assuming you'll both be joining my blogger fantasy football league?
P.S. Elsie, this football banter totally made me look back and my top 10 sexiest football players list. Aaron Hernandez? Yum!!! :)
Hells yeah! Fantasy league...count me in!
Deletewell I never knew this...time to wash all of mine
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, yes!! Wash!! lol
DeleteI'll have to stop using these
ReplyDeleteOr you could just clean them ;) lol
DeleteSeems like every time something comes out that's good for the environment and such, just a little while later someone has some study against it. I'd never remember to bring reusable bags to a store. - thanks for the post
ReplyDeleteTake a stop by my blog and check it out if you get a chance.

Yep glad I don't use those
ReplyDeleteAs the germs just curl my toes
But I re-use the plastic too
So it all evens out on cue
And in rhyming mode
A bit of overload..haha
i always have my shpping bag when i go out with my baby and i always use other two big for supermarket. plastic in italy is expensive, yes we pay for supermarket so i tend to use mine :)
ReplyDeleteGah, I totally have to wash my reusable bags. Thanks for the reminder
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have any so I can't wash what I don't have. :P
