This past weekend was Madre's birthday.
She turned 49, but decided to celebrate her 50th birthday instead.
She called it her "unbirthday". It was a very merry unbirthday.
Wishing you a very happy birthday, Madre!
While Madre and I partake in our share of bickering, we have a great relationship!
We're Italian. We're supposed to bicker. It's how we say "I care about you"!
This post is dedicated to my mother, her real birthday, and her celebrated unbirthday.
Here are 10 ways a mom says she cares without actually using the words!
1. Yelling
Mothers yell at you because they love you.
Besides, sometimes that's the only way they can really be heard!
2. Food
Mothers shove food down your throat because they love you.
There's something comforting about Madre always trying to feed me and others.
3. Nicknames
Mothers call you pet names out of pure love.
Madre likes to call us "asses", but we know it's her equivalent of "sweetheart". It is. I swear!
4. Pharmacy
Mothers let you treat their medicine cabinet like a drug store because they love you.
Who goes to the store for Band-Aids when you can just stop at Madre's house instead?
5. Tea
Mothers make you tea with love.
Besides, think of all the great conversations held over a cup of tea!
6. Phone Calls
Mothers call 5 billion times a day with messages of love.
Those phone calls are how Madre knows I'm alive, well, and in good spirits!
7. Dramatize
Mothers exaggerate stories because of love.
After all, they don't want you to make the same silly mistakes that they made!
8. Punish
Mothers punishments are acts of love.
How else would you become an acceptable member of society?
9. Warnings
Mothers warnings are told with love.
It's not nagging. It's solid advice that you should take! Madre almost always knows best.
10. Wake Up
Mothers give wake up calls out of pure love.
Madre knows if she don't wake me up 3 hours ahead of time, there's a 50% chance I'll be late.
How does your mom say "I Love You" without using words?
Ha! My mom's italian too, so that list is pretty familiar. Happy Birthday momma!
ReplyDeleteLOL So it's an Italian thing? Love that!
Deleteit seems like you have a nice Italian moma!
ReplyDeleteMine doesn't do any of those things above :)
Yes, I do! She may be a pain in the butt a lot of the time, but we love her. hahaha
DeleteHappy B'day to mom. This is so sweet, I loved this list, pretty cute and awesome, bookmarking it, if I steal, I'll try to remember to give credit ;)

My mom gives me random stuff like candy out of the blue. Does that count?
ReplyDeleteOf course that counts!!! It's motherly love :)
Deleteaw..happy birthday to her!
ReplyDeleteAll of Taylor's college friends use our medicine cabinet as a pharmacy, our bathroom as a rest stop, our kitchen as a restaurant, and our couch as a motel. haha. I'll mother anyone who comes in the door. :)
LOL A mommy's medicine cabinet is a pharmacy. There's always EVERYTHING. hahahaha Wait, the kitchen isn't a restaurant??? lol
DeleteLove that you mother people :)
dear jax happy birthday to your mother Im sure she is awesome like you, xx
ReplyDeleteYes, she's pretty awesome :) Thanks for the wishes, I'll pass them along!
Deletelovely. happy unbirthday Madre!
ReplyDeleteLOL Unbirthday is too funny!
DeleteAwww, happy birthday Madre! What a sweet post
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
DeleteWow, she does not look anywhere past mid 30's. Good genes.
ReplyDeleteWell, hopefully the good aging genese get passed along! Both my parents look great for their age :)
DeleteHappy Birthday, Madre! She sounds like a good Italian mamma! =)
ReplyDeleteWe have to exaggerate everything! The warnings, the stories, the punishment - our accents! Everything!
She's a great Italian mother! Sometimes an Italian pain in the rear end, but we love her anyways. hahahaha
DeleteLOL What's with all those exaggerations!? It's so true though...
I loved this post!!! This was a really great list, Jax! I hope your Mom had a wonderful birthday, and thanks for saying something good about all the mom's out there! They deserve much more credit than they usually get!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ray! Glad that you liked it :)
DeleteYes, my mommy enjoyed her unbirthday party. lol
Mommy's deserve a lot of credit! You're totally rigtha bout that ;)
Love #4! Whenever I get to visit my mom's, I totally raid her medicine cabinet! I think she stocks it up just for me :)
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to your mom!
LOL Yes, why do mom's always have everything in their medicine cabinet? It's just asking for it to get raided. hahahaha
DeleteThank you :)
Aw happy birthday to your mom!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much ! :)
DeleteHappy Birthday to your mom!!! I'm sure she'll love and get a laugh out of this. As far as my mom, the way she dotes on my own girls is such a wonderful way of showing how much she loves me.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yes, she'll get a laugh out of this. :)
DeleteThat's a great way of showing it! Besides, spoiling the kiddies sounds like great fun!
I love this list. And I see where you get your looks from. Madre is so cute!
ReplyDeleteOhh, don't tell her that! She likes to rub in how much we look alike. hahahaha Thank you, girl! She'll love this comment ;)
DeleteYour Mom is gorgeous!!!! Happy Birthday to her, and I sure hope she read your wonderful tribute to her. Oh, and since your Madre and I are the same age, I can truly be your mother. How scary is that?????
ReplyDeleteThanks!!! She'll love to hear this! :)
DeleteYou're the same age? Well, old enough to be my mother isn't necessarily a bad thing! haha
So true about all these ways of saying I love you without using words. I like that they all show how she cares :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Amanda! Yes, they all say that she cares. Even if I have to pull a few strings to figure out how it says it ;) lol
DeleteFirst and only unbirthday I ever heard of or been too, was fun indeed. And yeah the whole calling one I've seen to quite the extent..LMAO

Thanks Jasmine!! I'll pass along the message. She'll be happy :)
DeleteWow I'm surprised she wanted to celebrate it early. All the women I know are like "no I've been 29 for the last 4 years." That sounds like the best kind of relationship to have with your mother though. Mine always says "I love you" by making my favorite food when I come home to visit. Nothing like mom's cooking :)
ReplyDeleteLOL Well, madre's a little different.....hahaha
DeleteFavorite food is the best way to say I love you :)
i love your lists so much! you're so talented at keeping them interesting.
ReplyDeletei love the pharmacy one- that one goes to my dad. my siblings and I (and my cousins) call his house the general store because he has everything we need. we all always stop in there for camping gear, meds, tools... etc. so funny.
i love all of the other ones you have listed- especially ones that are not-so-nice things at first glance (i.e. yelling)- but I totally get how they are acts of love. Your mom is beautiful! happy birthday to her.
Thanks, Caitlin! That means a lot :)
DeleteOh, the pharmacy one is so true!!! It's like they stock it up specifically for us! A general store? hahahaha
Thanks for the compliments! She'll be very happy to read those!
You are the queen of the top ten lists. I love reading your stuff because it's so much smarter and has more heart than most anything I read out there.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cal! Glad to hear that you love my lists ;) Smarter and more heart? Oh my! Making me blush!!!
DeleteHappy birthday to your mom!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteWhat a nice post! I hope your mom had a great day. :)
ReplyDeleteI hope that she did too! Thanks girl :)
DeleteHaha, those are all very true.
ReplyDeletelol yes, they are!
Deletesend my greetings to your Mamma!!!! happy happy birthday!!!! tanti tanti auguri :)
ReplyDeletexoxo, Haus of Gala
Oh, I will! Thanks girl!! xo She'll love this especially since it's in her native tongue! haha
Deletehappy birthday to your mother!
ReplyDeletep.s
Do you watch 'gossip girl'? I have been watching funny 'gossip girl', but it's going to end to season 6. It's exciting, but i'm so sorry to hear that it is end. Particularly, the girl named 'lola' was appeared newly in gossip girl.
Thanks!!
DeleteI do not watch gossip girl, but I'm intrigued from all the hype on it! Have you checked out New Girl? That's been my show of the year! Sooo good!!
i cannot tell you how much i enjoy this list. nearly everyone my mother does. she doesn't yell, but she gets her point across:) i would add to the list: offer more food, and more...
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ed! This list seems to be a hit! LOL more and more and more food! Yep, that sounds like a real Italiano ;)
DeleteHappy b-day to your Mom (Madre).
ReplyDeleteThanks!!! :)
DeleteHappy Birthday to your mom! :-)... Mine does some of the same and I love it!
ReplyDeletehappy Bday to Madre!!! :) send her a big hug from me!!
ReplyDeletemy mom calls me Bambi since i was a little munchkin. i had a teeny tiny body but a huge head, much like bambi!! LOL so it stuck until today! and it has all sorts of versions and remixes, such as Bumbi, bambisita, bubi-bubi, bambilinda, and i can go on!!
my mom says i love you when she worries about me driving at night and getting home safe... she says i love you when she invites me out to go eat something together and spend some quality time!
aww now i miss her! LOL
great post Jax!! i´m glad you liked the list!!! :)
Have a great day!

Happy birthday Madre! I hope she has a fantastic day.
ReplyDeleteI didn't grow up with my mum and we live in different countries. But she's visiting the UK at the moment. She shows her love by saying, 'I love you' at the end of our telephone conversations.
It must be lovely to have your mum all year round. I miss that!
Have a great weekend :-)
